Message from the Director
Welcome to the Alberta Institute for American Studies!
We regret to inform you that as of June 30, 2013 the AIAS has been closed.
Established by the University of Alberta in November, 2005, The Institute for United States Policy Study began as a joint initiative of the School of Business and the Faculties of Arts; Law; and Agriculture, Forestry and Home Economics. Administratively based in the Faculty of Arts, the initial purpose of the IUSPS was to facilitate informed analysis and discussion of the policies and policy processes of the United States. Renamed the Alberta Institute for American Studies in the 2009-10 academic year, the AIAS subsequently began to broaden its mandate to include disciplinary and research interests outside the purview of policy studies. Following a very exciting year of programming in 2012-13 and a recommendation for continued support from an External Review Team, centralized funding for the AIAS was withdrawn.
On behalf of the AIAS, I would like to thank our colleagues, students, and members of the public for their support . I have been honoured to work alongside the members of the AIAS Governing Council and the President’s US Regional Council, as well as leaders from our allied faculties, UA International, the US State Department, and my fellow research directors both on and off campus.
Michael O’Driscoll, AIAS Interim Director
